Associate / Practitioner / Scholar
A CIRTL at IUPUI Practitioner can:
- Review and critique literature on teaching, learning, and assessment.
- Design and implement a Teaching-as-Research (TAR) project(s).
- Demonstrate how disciplinary research informs one's own teaching.
- Develop learning communities with students and peers.
- Design and implement teaching plans that leverage diversity to ensure success for all learners.
To earn a CIRTL at IUPUI Practitioner Completion Certificate, participants must complete the five required parts described below.
Once you have submitted the required documentation for all the five parts, contact the CIRTL at IUPUI team to earn your Practitioner completion certificate.
Prerequisites: Complete Associate-level requirements.
Part 1: Workshops:
Attend workshops on (a)Writing a Teaching Philosophy Statement and (b)Documenting Your Teaching. Submit post-attendance email as evidence of completion in in the Practitioner Module in Canvas.
Part 2: TAR Preparation:
Complete ONE of the following two TAR preparation options and submit the appropriate evidence of completion in the Practitioner Module in Canvas.

Part 3: TAR Learning Community and Proposal:
Participate in TAR Learning Community and submit your TAR project proposal at as evidence of participation in the Practitioner Module on Canvas. At this point you need to notify the CIRTL at IUPUI team to request feedback on and approval of your proposal.
Part 4: TAR Project Report:
Once your TAR proposal has been approved, you can implement your TAR project with required IRB approval. Please contact the CIRTL at IUPUI team to submit the IRB protocol for your TAR project. In most cases, without IRB approval, you will not be able to collect, analyze, or publish project data. Once your have completed your TAR project and tested your hypothesis, submit the project report in the Practitioner module in Canvas. Your project report should clearly articulate successful implementation of the full-inquiry cycle and integration of CIRTL core ideas.
Part 5: Teaching Philosophy Statement:
Revise the Teaching Philosophy Statement you submitted in the Associate module by reflecting on your experiences in the Practitioner level and submit an updated draft in the Practitioner module in Canvas. Your draft should clearly articulate if and how your TAR project experience has reshaped your teaching philosophy and practices.
*IUSM students can form a TAR learning community with peers from IUSM and other schools.The learning community must be approved by CIRTL leadership.
